pro-theatricality

 

... or at least, if not endorsing / encouraging, then at least accepting the existence and inevitability of theatricality as a social mechanism - putting on a front, impression management, role play, self-presentation etc - the dramaturgical analysis of the social everyday


one of a bunch of books (most of them  rather obscure / forgotten -  or from quite long ago, as in Goffman's case: 1959!) that had a large influence on S+A

i might do a series on these books, they deserve recirculation

    The basic idea in Goffman was quite influential in sociology and social anthology, particularity in studies of class relations: Sennett and Cobb's 'Hidden Injuries of Class' and James C Scott 'Domination and the Arts of Resistance' both use it to argue that dominated classes 'hide' what they are really thinking and co-produce a public discourse with the dominant class. I wouldn't be surprised if Sartre's version of existentialism was an influence on Goffman.

 I didn't know the music journalist and author  Mark Spitz   - who has died tragically young  - very well, but I always enjoyed chatting...
